A small group of 6th grade students from the Maplewood & South Orange School District are on a mission to stock the shelves of our local food banks for the 2011 holiday season without spending a dime. The art of couponing has received a tremendous amount of coverage in the recent past as TLC Extreme Couponing sores in popularity.
After watching the first episode of Extreme Couponing the children decided to begin collecting coupons and their campaign to help feed those less fortunate in our community. more »
Let your child use his/her wildest imagination to create a virtual world of his own using Photoshop CS5. The first in a series of courses that provide instruction on how to use Photoshop CS5 to create professional-looking images for both print and the Web. In this course, students will learn about image copyright, identify the components of the Photoshop environment, learn about the differences between rater and vector graphics, and learn how to use Adobe Bridge.
Students will learn to select specific image areas and will learn how to modify and manipulate selections. In addition, students will learn how to work with text, layers and layer effects; how to adjust, retouch, and resize images; and how to prepare images for printing and the Web.

The course encourages students to develop a voice through a wide range of formats and styles, where students work in teams proposing short, do-able documentary projects which they shoot and edit for screening and review by the group and public. Subject matter can come from local issues and events, artists and a host of interesting local characters. All work is reviewed and critiqued, and in the end, students take away at least one, possibly more, collaborative documentary pieces.
This workshop has been designed to engage local youth interested in film grades 9-12 and is limited to 10 seats. The workshop is held 6 consecutive Tuesdays, 10:00 to noon, with open workshops on Thursday July 21st and August 4th 10:00 am to noon for those who require additional time to edit their work. After meeting with Amy Jo Curran, the assistant director of the HK Community Fund, the girls are now organized and ready to launch their program September 2011 with hopes of having bins placed in each of the district’s elementary and middle schools for collecting coupons come September. Over the summer months the girls are requesting that all unused coupons be dropped off at The Center over so that they can begin to purchase non-perishable food and household items.

Building a sense of responsibility for your community and its members is a major part of HK Community Fund’s mission and these young people are why we do what we do. I am very proud of them.”

An intensive writing workshop where both professional and aspiring writers come together in a creative and supportive environment to individually write screenplays for film or stage.
Activities include learning key screenwriting concepts, reading and discussing existing scripts, viewing scenes from films for analysis from a writer’s perspective, and writing and revising drafts of students’ own scripts.
Your instructor will work along side you to provide detailed suggestions for improvement of story, structure, plot, characters, dialog, mechanics, and grammar. Writers learn standard screenwriting formatting using Final Draft, a leading word processing program for scriptwriting.
Final scripts are read aloud to the class so students can hear their work and visualize the final production.
This 5 week workshop will be lead by Michele Jelley, instructor of English Rutgers University and screenplay writer.
Option 1: Tuesdays 3:30-7:30 May 24, 31, June 7, 14 and 21st
Option 2: Monday and Wednesdays 10 am to noon May 23-June 23rd.
Workshop attendees welcome to work on their scripts independently in Final Draft during The Center’s open workshop hours. Pre-registration required.
Workshop fee of $75.00 includes workbook and is due at time of registration. Seating limited to 8.

Lego Animation Grades 6-7
Lego animation is a type of stop motion animation created by moving an object in very small amounts and taking a picture between each movement – think the California Raisins or Wallace and Gromit. You then run all of the pictures together at a fast pace to create the illusion that the object(s) are really moving.
Your child will learn digital technology while creating their own lego animation movie with a computer, digital camera, tripod, and batch of colorful legos.
Students will be encouraged to link this media project to their community or as a tool to bring a book report or other writing project to life.
Your child will also be introduced to iPhoto and Aperture to enhance and modify their photos in an environment that encourages collaboration among peers and senior peer mentors.
Workshop offered Tuesdays April 5 through May 3rd with registration beginning March 28th. Student fee $25.00.
