Rick Hauser, one of three partners at GAS Gallery & Studio, has invited those students interested in photography to further explore their love of imagery and the art of photography by generously offering to display The Center’s youth photography on Thursday, September 23rd from 7-9 pm. Students who participated in the July 24th “Long Shot”, a 24 hour local shoot, as well as those who have participated in the summer pilot program at The Center will have their works displayed for auction to raise funds to expand programming at The Center.
To further our youths’ experience we are selecting 6 students, random selection “drawing straws”, to shoot the Jeremy Moss’ artist reception Thursday September 9th from 7-10 pm. The exhibit “Elements” is a display of exquisite pattern formations of nature shaped by a variety of elements seen through Moss’ lens with an appreciation and understanding of nature. A celebration of our planet.
Moss, UK native and Maplewood resident, will have his works on display at GAS September 3 through October 1st. For further information on this exhibit, please visit www.itisagas.com
Students of the Maplewood & South Orange School District grades 7-12 are encouraged to submit their photography and should you have an interest in shooting the exhibit, “Elements”, please contact Stephanie Jelley, Director of Programs & Business Development, at stephanie@mwsohkfc.org.

Music is a powerful medium for youth expression, identity and social change. Young people, who rely on music as a way to channel a range of emotion, rarely find opportunities in the adult world to produce, write, and record original music. Music is perhaps, one of the most important mediums accessible for youth expression, voice, and desired change.
The HK Foundations Foundations Center of Mapelwood & South Orange has scheduled a variety of workshops for youth grades 7-12 to explore their unique youth voices through music. Using a variety of software from Garageband to Logic Express 9, youth will collaborate with others to write and produce music gaining both skills and self confidence.
This summer’s schedule includes:
Garageband/Logic Express 9 Monday and Wednesday 9-11:30 am
iPhoto/Aperture 3 Monday and Wednesday 3-5 pm
Blog Building & Blogging Tuesday and Thursday 9-11 am
iMovie & Final Cut Express Thursday 3-5:30 pm
Open Workshop* Friday 9-12 pm
Open Workshops provide students the opportunity to collaborate with their peers on individual or group projects. Registrations is necessary. Please send detailed email including students’ name, e-mail and date of reservation to programs@mwsohkfc.org
The HK Foundations Center of Maplewood & South Orange, “The Center”, is accepting applications for the Summer 2010 program. The summer program consists of various media modules developed to encourage our youth to express their unique youth voices.
Founder and President, Tom Kerns and Director Stephanie Jelley have overseen the development of each module to help ensure our youth have the opportunity to explore their creativity while building a sense of belonging in the community in which they reside. Fostering skills that are essential to success in the 21st century, each student will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of programming from iWorks to Final Cut Pro while working on both individual projects as well as creating projects that will have a lasting impact upon our community.
Programming is free to students grades 7-12 who reside in Maplewood or South Orange. For a full list of workshops and further information, please visit www.mwsohkfc.org or contact programs@mwsohkfc.org.

The Snakes performed to a full house at The St. James’ Gate Publick house last night as music lovers enjoyed the finest local pub grub and drink in the Irish tradition of the Meade family.
The event, thanks to the generosity of our supporters, was a great success which helps ensure future programming to the youth of Maplewood & South Orange.
A special thank you to The Snakes who donated their talent and to Publican, John Meade of The St. James’ Gate Publick House who so graciously welcomed each of our guests with first round on the house.
